Dietary Changes May Outperform Medications for IBS

If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), you know how uncomfortable and disruptive it can be. Medications for IBS typically include antispasmodics, medications targeting diarrhea or constipation, and even antidepressants. Yet, a new study shows that for more than 70% of people, dietary modifications may provide better relief than medications.

For a study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, researchers studied 294 adults with moderate-to-severe IBS. They divided them into three groups, each receiving a unique treatment protocol for their IBS over a four-week period.

The first group ate a low FODMAP diet, which restricts fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols, which can trigger IBS symptoms. This means avoiding foods like apples, dairy products with lactose, wheat-based products, and certain legumes. The second group was assigned a low-carbohydrate diet. Plus, the third group received medications tailored to their specific IBS symptoms.

At the end of the study, 76% of those following the low FODMAP and 71% following a low-carbohydrate diet had significant IBS relief. Meanwhile, those in the medication group experienced just a 58% improvement. This study underscores the importance of dietary modifications for people with IBS.

Can Being a Victim of Discrimination Age You?

Recent research published in the Brain, Behavior and Immunity-Health sheds light on the impact of discrimination beyond its well-known stress-inducing effects. This study suggests being a victim of discrimination may also have detrimental effects at the cellular level, potentially accelerating the aging process.

Researchers from New York University’s School of Global Public Health analyzed data from nearly 2,000 participants in the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) longitudinal study. By examining survey responses and analyzing DNA methylation in blood samples—a marker of stress and aging—they aimed to understand how discrimination impacts biological aging.

Their investigation focused on three types of discrimination: everyday, major, and workplace-related. The results revealed a strong association between higher levels of discrimination and accelerated biological aging. Both everyday instances and major incidents of discrimination consistently correlated with quicker aging, while workplace discrimination had a relatively smaller effect.

Further analysis found that lifestyle factors like smoking and body mass index explained part of this relationship, but other stress responses such as elevated cortisol levels and disrupted sleep patterns also contributed to the faster aging process. By uncovering these connections, these findings highlight the importance of addressing discrimination to ensure the health and well-being of diverse populations.

To Lose Weight, Aim for This “Magic Number” of Steps

If you’re trying to shed extra pounds, increasing your activity level is important. A morning walk may set you up for healthier eating throughout the day, while a brisk walk after eating may benefit your blood sugar. Watching Sports Boosts Your Happiness & Brain Health

Cheering on your favorite teams may be more than an enjoyable pastime. Researchers have found that viewing sports, especially baseball and football, activates a portion of the brain called the “rewards circuit,” which leads to increased feelings of well-being. In one groundbreaking study that used neuroimaging to measure brain activity before and after watching sports clips, viewing sports not only improved happiness and pleasure but increased grey matter volume in the areas of the brain that contain the “rewards circuit.” (More)
